Good literature makes an impact on society, and deserves to be recognized in a formal
way. That is what the Coretta Scott King Award is all about, recognizing good
literature. The Award is presented once a year by the Ethnic and Multicultural
Information Exchange Round Table, an affiliate of the American Library
Association (ALA). Named after the wife of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
this award is given to African American authors and illustrators who the ALA
deems deserving of extra merit for their work. The only requirement is that the
book be written for young adults or children and must be related to the
experience of being African-American.
The
very first Coretta Scott King Award was given in 1970 to Lillie Patterson for
her work, Martin Luther King, Jr.: Man of Peace.
Lev Mills designed an Award Seal
for display on the books in 1974. Bronze awards are given for winning books.
Pewter awards are given for honor books, and through revisions over time a
bronze and black seal has been adopted for winners and honored books.
