Inkjet Printer Tips [<< Back]

Inkjet printers provide some of the best photo and color quality prints in the printing industry today. There are many facets and tips to consider for inkjet printers and their high end counterparts, the giclee printers. Inkjet printers operate by dropping small dots of ink onto a page in high resolutions; the dots used are smaller than the width of a human hair. Both inkjet and giclee printers use a series of nozzles to spray the image onto the page.

Inkjets are one of the most affordable and widely used printing technologies available in the market today, but most people will require some tips and suggestions to get the most out of them. Ink is the main cost of these printers, and it can dry out if not used in a timely manner. If an end user does not print very often, then the ink could dry out before they use it, driving up the costs of ownership. However, it takes months or even a year to dry out an inkjet cartridge. Hewitt Packard produces some of the best home user inkjets and photo printers around. The Lexmark P4350 is a good all in one inkjet printer for the beginner or home user, priced around one hundred dollars. It provides printing, scanning, copying, and is rated as a photo printer.

The printer allows for the use of memory sticks from cameras to instantly transfer pictures or print directly from the cards, and can print full color photos at a speed of eleven pages per minute. For higher end users, a giclee printer is in order. Giclee printers are extremely high-end inkjet printers that operate with an eight or twelve color ink palette. This allows for the printing of high resolution digital graphics, art prints and fast speeds. These printers are used to print high quality artwork onto canvas, photo based paper, and virtually any other substrate. The inks used are of archival quality, meaning that the color will last for several lifetimes, if properly cared for.

Giclee printers are used by artists that do not want to mass produce the same work of art over and over again. The printer allows the artist to make dramatic copies of their work for a fraction of the time and cost it would take to produce them manually. Some giclee prints have sold for over one thousand dollars. The main aspects, or features, of giclee printers are the digitization of the art and the spectrophotometer. The photometer is responsible for accurately rendering the colors, while the digitization process ensures the work of art is stored in the computer or printer in its truest form. One of the best new giclee printers, also referred to as large format inkjets, is the Canon iPF9000, which features a large set of functions and printing features like a twelve color ink palette and a wide sixty inch printing area. The Canon iPF9000 is fairly complicated and for some end users this will be a hindrance.
