Fonts are a great way to add style to web pages, documents, PDF files, and company letterheads. In order to use new fonts an end user must download or buy new fonts. There are a multitude of font file types that can be used and downloaded. Some of the more common font file types are True Type Font (.ttf), Screen Font (.scr), Open Type Font Fie Format (.otf), and Macintosh Font (.mrf). A large majority of fonts, almost all, can be found for free download on the web from various pages and directories.

For Windows users, downloading and installing fonts is quite simple. First find the fonts for download and extract the files if the downloaded file is compressed. The end user should be careful to extract the files to their "fonts" folder. The fonts folder can be found by using the control panel and then clicking on the folder label "fonts." If the operating system is Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, the end user will need to be an administrator to install the fonts. After extraction, sort the files by clicking the "date modified" button and select the files based on the date downloaded.

At this time the user may check each font's style by double clicking it. Too many fonts in the font folder can slow down a Windows system; the end user should only download the fonts they wish to keep. Hold down "ctrl" while clicking the fonts not wanted and press "del" to delete them from the folder. The computer may need to be restarted for the changes to take effect.
