Printer drivers allow the operating system to communicate with and run the printer and are available for download at the printer's respective manufacturer websites. Dot matrix printers use a system of very small dots to display an image on a page. These printers are the oldest printing technology on the market and have two types or styles of printers. serial dot matrix printers and line dot matrix printers. In serial printers the print head delivers the ink to the page via a number of pins or print wires. The ink is transferred to the page by way of electromagnetic fields. The ink has a charge that when the electromagnetic field is produced pushes the ink onto the page; this is why dot matrix printers are sometimes referred to as impact printers.
Dot matrix printers have the best cost per page ratio and are still widely used today; they also have a print speed from two hundred to one thousand characters per second making them extremely fast. On the other side of printing technology are the laser printers of recent development. Laser printers rely on small charge particles called toner and an electrostatic transfer belt to apply text and images to a printed page. The transfer belt is charged as well as the toner; there is no impact in laser printers. After the toner has been transferred to the page a fuser heats the toner particles and melts them into the page making a permanent document. Laser printers are marked by their fast speeds, above average to excellent image reproduction and high numbers of prints that toner cartridges can produce. They are most often used in high paced business applications.
