The Idiots Guide to Changing Your Ink Cartridge
What starts out as a simple task, changing your printer cartridge, often becomes difficult and sometimes messy.
If you have seen a low ink indicator, or your cartridge is more than 6 months old, then it is time to purchase a replacement printer cartridge.
Trying to shake your printer cartridge is often tried by those not yet ready to replace. The problem with shaking a toner cartridge is that if it is put to more than a 40 degree angle, or shaken too vigorously, it may spill. Sometimes it is better to just restock. Toner cartridges no longer have to be purchased as OEM prices, with remanufactured alternatives from companies like Clickinks.com*L
eave your old ink cartridge installed in the printer until you have obtained a replacement cartridge, otherwise your print head nozzles may dry out.*I
nk cartridges usually have a protective covering, which has sheltered them during shipment.
- If you have Epson, Canon or Brother, look for a yellow tape seal or plastic red tab that tell you to remove them. Do not remove the additional transparent plastic, or a pointed mechanism, otherwise your cartridge will leak or malfunction.
If there is an additional piece of plastic in your ink cartridge box, this is an adapter that needs to be connected to your cartridge. Follow the included instructions in your package, and carefully connect the adapter to the compatible ink cartridge.
- If you have HP, Lexmark or Dell look for a cap and protective tape needing removal.
Do not let anything touch the micro-chip, this is usually copper or green, and is sensitive to touch.*P
rinter should be powered on.*W
ait until printer is not in movement, and then open the cover to replace your cartridge.*M
ake sure that you are installing the cartridge in the appropriate carriage for the new color. For example, if you have a new magenta ink cartridge, replace it in the carriage intended for only the magenta cartridge.
If your Brother toner cartridge does not seem to clip on the drum where it usually fits, it will still work, some remanufactured toners clip from underneath.
Some thicker inks need to settle for 1 hour after installation before printing. If you have printed or performed a head cleaning with less than desirable results, let the cartridge settle in its new printer for 1 or 2 hours before attempting another print. Excessive print head cleanings will deplete your ink.
If your new cartridge is not recognized by the printer, simply leave it in place then unplug the printer for 10 minutes. After waiting 10 minutes, hold down the power button for 30 seconds then plug the printer back in. This will clean the printer memory, allowing it to resync to the new cartridges.*C
lose the printer cover. Lights may flash, simply let the printer perform without interruption.
Replacing your ink or toner cartridge can become fool proof by simply following these instructions!

Inked: The history of printer ink
An ink is a liquid containing a mixture of pigments and or dyes used for coloring a surface to produce an image or text.
Ink is a compound medium composed of solvents, pigments, dyes, resins, lubricants, surfactants and other materials. The materials serve many purposes including controlling flow, thickness of the ink and the print results.
Up until the mid 1980’s, with the introduction of home computers, consumers did not have the freedom of home printing. Today in the U.S. most homes have printing, faxing and scanning options. As a result, buying a cartridge of ink is now a part of both business and consumers shopping lists, similar to buying a bottle of ink for fountain pens years ago.
The majority of ink cartridges from companies selling remanufactured and compatible ink cartridges, like Clickinks.com
, contain dye based ink. OEM (Original equipment manufacturer) cartridges may contain pigment based ink. You will get a wider range of color into dyes than into pigments. Consequently, dye based inks tend to be more vibrant than pigment based inks. However, results depend upon the overall printer design.
Some printer brands use a combination of both dye and pigmented, other printers can use either type of ink, while still others are only restricted to dye based or only restricted to pigment based.
The price of replacing printer cartridges has recently become a point of contention with consumers, especially as prices are lowered on printers. The major printer manufacturers like Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Dell, Canon, Epson and Brother, often only break even selling printers, because they plan to make a sizeable profit by selling cartridges over the life span of the printer.
One reason printers are now available at much lower prices is because, in order to continue benefiting from cartridge sales, they have installed microchips on their cartridges to interact with the printer in a way that prevents operation when the ink level is low or when the cartridge has been refilled. Many cartridges produce up to 38% more prints, even though the chip stated that the cartridge was empty.
Customers can often cut printing costs by using ink cartridge refill kits, or by purchasing new non-O.E.M./Original equipment manufacturer brands. The non-OEM equipment can include Compatible or Remanufactured ink cartridges. The replacement of OEM ink cartridges is more common in other countries, with United States starting to catch up. These less expensive alternative cartridges sometimes have more ink than the original OEM branded ink cartridges and may produce the same, better, or sometimes inferior quality, depending on a variety of factors, including the retailer chosen, and their ability to produce a quality product.
Some manufacturers like HP, Dell and Lexmark have built-in the printer head on the cartridge. This also makes the printers cheaper, but the cartridges more expensive because with every replacement you are paying for a new precision print head. Other brands, such as Epson, do not include the print head and so the printers tend to be somewhat more expensive.

Paper Saving Tips
- Print on Both Sides: Whether you are printing or making copies, you can cut your paper (& paper costs) usage in half by simply selecting to print on both sides. Some printers offer a “duplex” feature, even if yours does not you can simply print your odd numbered pages first (beginning with your first page), then flip around the pages and print the even pages on the other side (beginning with page 2).
- Print two pages on each side: Another money saving feature that you can select is to print columns. No matter what type of printer you have, Microsoft Word has this print option. If printing from another program, you can simply reduce the size of your images or font, allowing you to fit more on each page.
- Also, when you are printing, or receiving paper that is one sided, you can reuse the other side so that there is not as much waste.
- Think before you buy. You can save money by purchasing your paper in bulk. Purchasing bulk paper and bulk ink ahead of time will also limit last minute purchases where you will settle for any price. Recycled paper, which can be purchased in the same price range as non-recycled paper, is also a great solution for our environment.
These tips will not only save you money, but also reduce the deforestation and piling up of landfills.

Worrying About The Printer Consumables

Top Photo Printing Tips from Clickinks.com
1) Choose the Right Paper – normal, glossy, premium glossy, matte etc. You can even save up to 60% on buying Clickinks paper
2) Use our Ink – Lab tests have shown Clickinks' ink
to be the same quality as OEM ink, but of course it is a fraction of the price. So go ahead, print as many copies of your photos as you’d like and share them w/ friends and family.
3) Check your settings – Setting up your printer properly for page layout, borders, centering, paper type etc.Check Your Settings:
Properly configuring your printer’s settings before printing is essential to producing optimal results for your photos. The options available for each specific printer model can vary greatly, but the settings discussed below are some of the most common.
Quality Options: Printers typically have quality options like “draft”, “text”, “photo” and “best photo” to select from in the printer dialog box. Choose the best quality available and make sure you have the right paper for that selection (glossy photo paper for high quality prints).
Paper Options: Select the paper you have loaded in your printer in this selection box. Printers are specifically calibrated to apply ink differently based on the paper you have loaded.
Orientation: Choose the appropriate format for the photo you are trying to print. (show examples of pics in landscape & portrait).
Other Settings: Many printers have the option to center the image and reduce / enlarge the size. It is not recommended that you use the enlarge function as it will deteriorate the quality of the image (significantly after more than a 20% change in size).
Finally, use print preview. Check that the size, orientation and margins all look right before printing. Once you’re confident that all your settings are correct, print it!
There are many different kinds of paper out there intended for different kinds of print jobs. Using the wrong kind of paper can result in poor print quality or a waste of money. Hopefully, this will help take the mystery out of your prints.
First there's your every day normal paper. This is the cheap stuff that's just perfect for those small jobs, where having a slightly fuzzy looking print doesn't really matter.
Next we've got Inkjet stock paper. This is more geared for printing out important documents, business reports, etc. This differs from regular paper because it has a higher "brightness" level, meaning that the paper is smoother and less absorbent, so the print will look nice and crisp.
Lastly, we've got Photo Paper. You can guess what this is used for. The two big choices here are between “glossy” and “matte” paper. Glossy paper has a shine to it and really makes the colors come alive. It looks and feels like a true photographic print. Matte paper would be ideal if you were printing a graphic-heavy page for a report or special presentation. The colors look bright, text looks dark and crisp, and it has a real professional feel to it.
The fancier paper might make you shy away because of the price, but Clickinks paper
is actually up to 60% less than the official brands!
