A Guide to Using Photoshop [<< Back]

The first time you open Adobe Photoshop it can be immensely overwhelming. There is so much to learn and knowing where to start can be frightening. Here is a basic tutorial on how to use some of the hundreds of features Photoshop has to offer, and some of the PS tools you'll find yourself using again and again.

The marquee tools are found in the top left hand corner of your tool window. There is a rectangular, eliptical, single row, and single column tool. They're used to select part of your project.

To select an abnormal shape that the marquee tools won't allow there are the lasso tools. To use these while on the layer of your project you're working on, click and hold down the mouse button while you draw the shape you'd like selected.

The move tool is used to position the current layer of your project. You simply click on your project and drag the layer into the position you would like.

Set appropriate margins for a printed page. There should be at least a half-inch of white space, unless it's a dense-text document, like a contract, and you need to save space. Most modern printers will print nearly to the edge of the page, but it's more difficult to read. Print your design with quality color ink from Clickinks.com.

If you would like to select an area in your project that is all the same color, select the magic wand tool and click the area in your project you would like selected.

You use the crop tool to trim off any excess of your project. Simply click and drag the cropping box around the area you would like to keep and then double click in the center of the box you just formed. Everything that existed outside of the box should be gone.

To draw on your project you may use the brush tool. Just click on your project and draw while holding down the left mouse button.

If you need to erase part of a layer you can use the eraser tool. Click and drag just like you would with the paint brush tool.

The last tool that is going to be covered is the paint bucket tool. This can be used to fill an entire selected area with a certain color with one click of your mouse.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of more tools that Photoshop has to offer but these are some of the essentials you must Acquaintyourself with when beginning to learn how to use one of the most powerful photo editing tools on the market. There is much to learn and one of the best ways to do so is by trial and error.
