E. B. White was a well-known writer who wrote many popular books, such as Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web, and The Trumpet of the Swan. He also contributed to The New Yorker magazine for a long period of time.
Born in Mount Vernon, New York on the 11th of July, 1899, Elwyn Brooks White was the youngest son of piano manufacturer Samuel White and Jessie Hart. He joined the army for some time before he attended Cornell University. He assumed the position of editor for The Cornell Daily Sun, and he was joined by Allison Danzig, who would become a successful sportswriter of New York Times later. He graduated from Cornell in the year 1921. In 1929, he tied the knot with Katharine Sergeant Angell, who was an editor for The New Yorker. Some of White’s first articles were published in 1925 in The New Yorker, and after he became a writer for the magazine, he contributed articles for around six decades. He was noted for his short essays, notes, and comments in the magazine, and he was responsible for giving the news breaks for the magazine. These news breaks were brief humorous comments that were written in a very creative style, and they gained huge attention. He also wrote for Harper’s magazine as a columnist for five years.
White started writing children’s fiction in the late 1930s, and he wrote it because of his niece Janice White. One of his first books, Stuart Little, was the story of a shy New Yorker mouse that has very pleasant manners. In 1952, he published Charlotte's Web, which relates the story of a pig that is saved by an intelligent spider. This book received several awards. The third novel was The Trumpet of the Swan, which was published in the year 1970. This story is about a swan that tries to learn how to play the trumpet to impress a pen.
White got the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 1970 for his work in children’s literature. He got the highest votes for his stories from students, which enabled him to receive the Sequoyah Award and the William Allen White Award. His other famous novels were One Man's Meat and The Second Tree from the Corner. Besides these, he wrote other books as well, such as handbooks and instructions for new writers. White’s books have been used in students’ composition classes.
White got the honorary Pulitzer Prize in 1978 for his works, and he got the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the year 1963. He was also a member of some of the most prestigious literary societies in the US. He passed away on the 1st of October, 1985 at his residence in North Brooklyn, and he was buried next to his wife.
