Cartoons are a form of visual art that consists only of illustration. Whether it is a political cartoon, Sunday's newspaper comic strip, a graphic novel, comic book, or a television show, cartoons provide people with entertainment, joy, and laughter. Cartoons have been a staple of the American newspaper for decades. In 1843, a magazine called Punch had the first widely published illustrated comic. Older comics were typically political in nature and were meant to satirize current events. Soon, comic strips in weekly newspapers began to become commonplace. Charles Schulz's Peanuts comic featuring the lovable dog Snoopy and his owner Charlie Brown have been an American staple since 1948. These comic cartoons were simple in style and easy to understand. They are still features in many newspapers across the country today.
Cartoons are not only limited to features in newspapers, however. Comic books are a hugely popular cult style of entertainment that has created characters like Spiderman, Batman, and Superman, all of whom are now true icons. Thousands of people flock to Comic-Con, a comic lover's convention, each year. Animated cartoons like Looney Tunes provide television animated fun for children and adults alike. Cartoons have definitely evolved over time. Today, more modern cartoons are often adult in nature and can even be controversial. The style of animation has changed as well. With the help of computers, newer cartoons are often drawn through a program and not by human hands. Of course, this is not true for all newer cartoons, but it has become a more typical, particularly for animated cartoons on television. Whether it is a classic old political cartoon or a Japanese anime television show, comics have been the source of great inspiration, fun, and imagination for many years.
